Every reader knows the feeling...
You pick up a book you should love, but suddenly reading feels like a chore. Your TBR keeps growing, your current read sits untouched for days, and nothing sounds exciting anymore.
Welcome to the reading slump.
The good news? Sometimes the solution is simpler than buying more books or forcing yourself through another five-star recommendation. One of the best ways to reset your reading experience is by switching genres.
Why Reading Slumps Happen
Reading burnout often comes from repetition. Even if you love a certain genre, consuming too much of the same tone, pacing, or storyline back-to-back can start to feel predictable.
In 2025 I read 72 books, 70 of them were thrillers and by the end of the year they all started to blend together.
For example:
- Five dark thrillers in a row can feel emotionally exhausting.
- Too many heavy literary fiction novels may feel mentally draining.
- Reading nonstop fantasy series can lead to world-building fatigue.
- Even romance readers can burn out on similar tropes over time.
Your brain starts craving something different, even if you don’t realize it yet.
Switching Genres Refreshes Your Reading Experience
Changing genres helps reset your attention and excitement for reading.
If you usually read:
- romance → try a fast-paced thriller
- fantasy → pick up a cozy contemporary
- literary fiction → choose a lighthearted rom-com
- nonfiction → dive into magical fantasy or sci-fi
- emotional heavy reads → switch to something funny or comforting
The contrast can make reading feel exciting again.
In March of 2026 after FOUR 1-2 ⭐ reads, I switched it up and listened to my first sci-fi book in years, Project Hail Mary (5⭐) because I wanted to read the book before watching the movie and it changed my entire mindset on switching up genres to prevent burnout!
Sometimes all it takes is one completely different book to remind you why you love reading in the first place.
You Might Discover New Favorites
Some readers stay in one genre because it feels safe or familiar. But exploring outside your comfort zone can introduce you to books you never expected to love. I re-discovered my love for historical fiction this year and discovered two new authors, Taylor Jenkins Reid & Kristin Hannah that have now given me 3 of my new favorite books.
A romance reader may discover they enjoy mystery.
A thriller fan might unexpectedly fall in love with cozy fantasy.
Someone who never reads historical fiction could find a book that becomes an all-time favorite, like me!
The best part of reading is discovering stories you never would have picked for yourself. That's where Blind Dates with a Book come in!
Reading Should Feel Fun — Not Like Homework
One of the biggest mistakes readers make during a slump is forcing themselves to finish books they aren’t enjoying.
It’s okay to:
- DNF a book
- take a break from a genre
- reread an old favorite (I re-read 2 books at the beginning of the year while in a slump)
- try shorter books
- switch formats like audiobooks or ebooks
Reading is supposed to be enjoyable. There are no rules that say you have to stay loyal to one genre forever.
Try a “Genre Reset”
If you’re feeling stuck, try choosing a book that’s completely different from your last three reads.
You may be surprised how quickly your excitement comes back.
Sometimes the perfect cure for a reading slump isn’t reading less — it’s reading differently!
